What is a UMD? UMD Logo
UMD (Universal Media Disc) is a new, proprietary, high-capacity optical medium enabling game software, full-motion video and other forms of digital entertainment content such as games, movies and music, to be stored and played. Newly developed by Sony, the UMD is a read-only compact storage media. At only 60mm in diameter, it can store 900mb (single layer) up to 1.8GB (dual layer) of digital data. It is perfect for a portable entertainment player like the Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable). UMD stores a broad range of digital entertainment content including games, movies, music , and more. For example, a feature length film can fit on to a single UMD. These are sometimes called UMD movies or PSP movies.

Movies on UMD
When new movies are released on DVD, they will generally release the UMD version the same day. All titles that are released on DVD may not necessarily be available in the UMD version. Please check with NetMovieDeals to search for newly released movie titles on any type of media. Due to the smaller capacity of the UMD, some or all of the Bonus Materials including behind-the-scenes featurettes found on some DVD versions must be omitted prior to release on UMD for PSP playback. Most titles are movie-only. Although some may see this as a drawback, you must admit that being able to watch a full length movie on this very compact and portable format is a great way to keep yourself entertained on a long trip. Retail prices for these films generally range from $16.99 up to $29.99 but can often be found for much cheaper right here at NetmovieDeals.com.

Screen Format of UMD
All films will be released in the widescreen format to be compatible with the 16x9 screen ratio of the PSPIn terms of screen formatting, 1.85:1 movies generally fill the display however, some 2.35:1 movies are letterboxed to preserve the correct aspect ratio. Other movies may be cropped to fill the 16x9 frame similar to HD broadcasts of 2.35:1 movies on cable television. The PSP's LCD display screen has a 480x272 pixel resolution, and can reproduce some 16.77 million colors. The video is encoded in the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC format, with the audio in ATRAC3plus.
